Shannan Hearne
working out of Lakewood Farm
in Smyrna, SC

803-389-0972

Shannan Hearne began riding at the tender age of 6 in upstate New York with the United States Pony Club.  Coming from a family of non-riders, she was fortunate to bum rides on a cute but not cherubic Shetland pony named Cocoa.  Standing less than half the height of the other junior hunters in the pony club, Cocoa jumped onto and back off of most jumps in the cross country course.  In the midst of most stadium jumping events, Cocoa would snatch the snaffle bit between his teeth and race from the arena with rider in tow - barely.  Such was Shannan's first venture into horseback riding.

When her family relocated to South Carolina Shannan purchased a Welsh pony cross who taught her to barrel race as Joker only had two speeds -- stop and gallop.  While Joker's temperament and speed were a step up from Cocoa, he was still a temperamental handful.  Shannan remembers standing in the arena trying to mount while Joker kicked out at her with his rear leg.  Her riding instructor told her to kick back.  What ensued was a kicking match that could have appeared in any Jackie Chan movie.

As a teenager, Shannan moved up to an Arabian Saddlebred cross mare that she trained herself.  Shannan's training style incorporates many natural horsemanship techniques coupled with gentling and control tactics to prevent kicking matches, runaways, or jumping on and off of obstacle course jumps.  Shannan and her mare, Ginger, grew up together trail riding in the Carolina piedmont and attending local horse shows.  When Ginger's training was complete, Ms. Hearne began training young riders.

Today Shannan works with horseback riding students of all ages teaching huntseat and western pleasure lessons.  Still devout in her belief that a horse can be your best friend she schools horses and riders in love and respect for one another while stressing safety and responsible horsemanship.  Rider and horse training are available through Lakewood Farms in Smyrna, SC by appointment.  Lessons take place in both private and group settings either in the arena or on trails where a horse can be best enjoyed by accomplished students.

Bringing 33 years of love of horses and experience to both her human and equine students, Shannan looks forward to making your horse dreams come true.
